Tweets.

The public figure I chose to follow was John Legend(http://twitter.com/johnlegend). I enjoy his music so I have been following him for a long time. He tweets about his new album, artists he is working with, and where he is traveling. He also posts things he is doing like watching basketball and he replies to some of his fans as well. He has a hash tag called #wake up 2010 (http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23wakeup2010) about his new album coming out.

The news source I followed was CNN (http://twitter.com/CNN). I read CNN almost everyday and this is a good way to read a brief descripition of a story and then decide if you want to read the whole story.

The perosn I know that I followed, is my friend Johnathan (http://twitter.com/EgOsOFFICIAL), who is a musician. He posts about his new music, replies to his friends, and post Youtube videos he has made.

Portfolios.

I chose Weebly because it's easy. I also like how you can pull in different features so easily, changes colors, save favorties, and add pictures so easily. I want to display different activities I do such as writing, photography, music, blogging, etc. and this site is very easy to use. So far, everything has been working without a problem so I hope it continues to work hassle free. I like al the layouts and how professional my website is coming out. It looks like I really know how to make my own website.

Evaluations.

Evaluation of Derek Michael's site-
I really like the colors used and the layout. Everything is easy to navigate and I like how he incorporated the work in class we did. I think that the tabs he used could be shorter, so when you scan the page quickly you know what you want to click on and find more about. Also, I think there could be some more pictures or something creative that could help make the site a little bit more fun. I enjoyed the readings and video and such that he posted. I also like how he put the comment section on his home page so people can tell him what they think. That's a really good addition to his website.

Evaluation of Cat Rinella's site-
I like the background, polka dots can be distracting sometimes but the way this page is set up is really nice. It doesn't make anything hard to see. I like how everything really stands out and the pictures and really nice. Very springtime. I also really enjoy the writings. I can tell what kind of person Cat is and there is also a picture which makes this even more personal. the pictures coordinate with the writings which ties everything together. I also like the fact that the layout is clean and professional looking but also fun.The only thing that I think needs work are some more writings, personal or class-related, and more information about herself.

Evaluation of Erica Miller's site-
I really like the bold font and colors Erica used. It's bright and catches your attention. The font for the rest of the page is really nice because it's clear and easy to read. I get a sense of what Erica is like through her writings. I really like how she incorporated her work from class through the whole page. I like that you can scroll down and read one thing and a time but there are nice big pictures to help explain what her posts are. I really like her whole page. The only suggestion I would make is to add some of her own pieces apart from class or just add more information about herself.

Marketing CSR.

St. Rose does a very god job of marketing itself to students. I remember before I came here and I got flyers and information mailed to me about numerous colleges and St. Rose was the one who looked most interesting. I actually thought the school would look and be slightly different from what I saw through the marketing because I never really visited the school before.
As for redesigning the website I wouldn't change the layout but I would add some more information and try to have some of the students put something into that they would like to be able to find on it. When I go to search for information on the website I either have trouble getting to it or I find very little information. I know it's easy to find someone to email the question you have but if the information such as housing, course catalog, minors, etc. was more readily available on the website then students could benefit more. Also, I think there should be different links to different clubs and groups we have to make it more interactive. I would join more things if I could go on the St. Rose website and click on links and see there pages to see what I'm joining. I believe there should be links to the different departments as well, such as the music department, art department, education department, etc. with all the faculty, classes you need, pictures, students work, etc. I really think that the school could benefit from these changes and get even more students to the school.
Another big thing I think we could do is having a link for St. Joe's so we could have more events. There are students that have performances in St. Joe's but not everyone attends because the people in the groups only publicize them so their friends only really find out through Facebook. If we had a page of when events were taking place and when they weren't we could have kids book the open spaces possibly and take more of a part in the college. They could use the space for things like speakers pertaining to the majors, poets, singers, and such so EVERYONE could be involved. Because St. Rose is not as large as other campuses, it could make all of these changes more easily.
As for a catchphrase for the college, “Passion. Knowledge. Purpose.” I think it’s rather catchy. I definitely think another phrase could accurately portray St. Rose instead. This could be “Scientia”, meaning knowledge. I think this would be better for Saint Rose because most other colleges have a motto that is Latin and it portrays the college at a higher status. I think knowledge would fit because it sums up everything thing I’ve talked about.

The Saint Rose Difference.

CSR portrays the college as being a modern, fun-loving place that also knows how to be serious when it comes to educating. The website is very interactive and appealing. The iPhone app shows we are targeting high school students while adapting to their modern culture. It comes off very professional while personable. The college wants to you to personalize your stay at St. Rose and be comfortable with making friends and living on campus. Because the college is private and more costly than others, it explains that they help out with financial aid for 95% of the students.
As for the youtube videos, they show off the fun side of of St. Rose and the serious side, by giving success stories. The upbeat music draws in attention, along with the special effects. Those show the college is keeping up with an adaptive culture.
The facebook pages reinforce the adaptive culture of St Rose while also providing students information for the college. They also give St. Rose students the opportunity to connect with eachother.
Compared to other colleges, such as Harvard, Oxford, RISD, and Unitec, Saint Rose comes off more modern. The other colleges have a more serious tone and focus a lot more on academics. They also show more current work the students are doing and have achieved. St Rose spends more time showing that they have a friendly, community based campus, while the other colleges are more focused on where their students end up, and what they achieve.

Going Viral.

Charlie the Unicorn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5im0Ssyyus

What made this video catch on were the voices that were given to animals, in this case, unicorns. The voices that are used hi-pitched and annoying. Another reason for this going around was that people found it amuzing because it told a little story even though it was idiotic and there are made-up creatures. It's very repetitive, catchy, and to the point so it gets stuck in your head easily. Also, the creators of the video made this video a little mysterious at first, so you wonder what's going to happen, but you find out in the end the real meaning of Candy Mountain.
We imagine the process started with one person showing someone else and passing to their friends and such. Now there are 46 million views of the video. We think that this video was ust lucky and that if no one had saw it to begin with it wouldn't have gotten passed around.

Wiki.

For this class, we would need to include times and days of the week, a calendar for different homework assignments due, links to our blog, facebook, twitter, and any other articles we would need to read. We would also need to include information on how to post links. We could include other pages relevant to our class, such as information we find for class, like the activist sites, social justice sites, etc we have found. There could even be a brief descripition of how our homework is to be completed. We've learned a lot of different information in this class and we could share it on our Wiki so everyone else could gain the same knowledge.

Wikipedia.

These are the new changes I made to the Massry Center for Arts section:
This [http://www.strose.edu/campus/masrry_center_for_the_arts] Massry Center features the Kathleen McManus Picotte Recital Hall, the Esther Massry Gallery, and the William Randolph Hearst Music Wing, the Massry Center for the Arts serves as the primary venue for concerts and exhibitions by the College’s students and faculty each year, and a performance and exhibition space for talented artists, musicians, vocalists and orchestras from around the world.
Initially, this section just talked about the fact of that the new building is green but I added information as to what the building included and who the buliding is for. I changed this section slighty because although it is called the Massry Center for the Arts, people may wonder what or who performs in the venue. Also, the different sections of the building I included to describe the building a little further. This information is taken directly off the St. Rose page and the link brings you directly there.

What is the best way to "improve" our fan page?

In order to get more fans I think we should change the picture, I like the gnome but I don't think people are really going to relate the gnome with Writing for New Media. Also, I think another way for more fans is to change the name of the fan page because it just makes it seem like were promoting the class and we don't want any other members to join that aren't in the class. We can also make the names of the posts more interesting so people will want to read the links on our fan page.

What is the best way to use Facebook?

The best way to use facebook is connecting with people you don't see on a daily basis and keeping many things private. If I had to introduce it to someone who's never used it before I would explain how there are different networks that you can belong to that help you connect with people that you go to school with or live/lived around. You can become friends with these people you know or don't know and write on their walls, sends messages if you wan't it to be private, or chat with them when they are online. I would explain it's a way you can share what your are doing at any time and your friends or others can see what is going on in your life. Also, you can upload pictures to show people other aspects of your life. But I would tell them that I think it's best to limit the people you become friends with to the people you know because you never know who's on the computer. I keep my profile very private and limit the amount of information I put at my status, pictures, and comments because anyone can get ahold of your information.
